If you want any of these articles to appear on NYBowhunter.com just let me know and I'll get them up so others can see them. I can also try to get them on Outdoor Life as I'm currently writing for the Big Buck Zone blog.

Knowledge is desperately needed to offset the overly competitive nature of hunters in heavily populated New York State. The greatest obstacles to QDM in NYS are unspoken and psychological (ie. fear of failure). "Gotta get my buck!" Most successful hunters do not value ethics as a main priority and the ones who benefit the very most from QDM are the poachers who get dramatically increased access to much better "racks", to offset their masculine inadequacies, at the expense of the deer and ethical men.
Until we understand what the true motivations are, how dirty and lawless rural New York "hunting" truly is, and dramatically improve our law enforcement commitment to this valuable and majestic resource, we can't address the unspoken obstacles to the antler restrictions which are long overdue. What keeps good men on the defensive is a lack of confidence that one officer per DMU can protect a quantitatively reduced and qualitatively enhanced resource for law abiding citizens.

Very good article. I live in PA and we have had antler restrictions in place for under 10yrs. It is still a matter of debate here.

How about submitting this excellent article to the various publications that most hunters subsribe to such as, New York Outdoor News, Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, New York
Sportsman, Sports Afield, etc. For instance in NY Outdoor News "Letters to the Editor"
there is always an ongoing debate about the pros and cons of antler restrictions. This article would certainly provide the needed information to settle outdated and misinformed preconceptions of this issue. This is the first I have seen of actual field data findings to support AR and I'm sure that other sportsmen would find it most helpful in making a determination as to for or against.

Hello Richard,
I have been following the 3 pt. on one side for the last four years and haven't seen much of an improvement on the lands and club lands I hunt. Many are not pleased with this trial by the NYS DEC biologist for herd antler development. I believe our WMU's are shot out and we can't get access to criticle private land and state land enclosed by posted private property.

We fought over this issue when you were with the NYS DEC even back to the days of Glenn Cole. Unless the NYS DEC sets realist quotas for the properties where hunters have access we are going to be fighting an uphill battle of herd reproduction. Genetics are so screwed up here in the Hudson Valley NY that we need at least a year or two of no hunting at all to stimulate the herds.

I am sure you will come back with some reasons to dispute my beliefs in this area. Until then we can agree to disagree on the NYS DEC methods.

Great suggestions guys thanks. We are currently distributing these articles online via facebook and twitter. If you have any other suggestions for online destinations, let me know. I am not sure how to get the local newspapers to print articles like this but I will definitely look into it. Any help in that arena would be appreciated as well. Thanks again. - Lou

This is an excellent article, but it is it being published in places where it's needed ? All of us can use a refresher course, but how do we reach the folks that are not QDM savvy ?
